About Us

The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living and advocacy.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is a federation of 10 provincial Foundations, led and supported by a force of more than 130,000 volunteers.

  • Throughout its history, the Foundation has relied on the generous donations of millions of Canadians.
  • The Foundation receives no operational funding from government sources.
  • In 2008, the Foundation invested more than $127 million into research, health promotion, and community programs.

Our Work in Nova Scotia

  • The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia is involved in many activities to address heart disease and stroke, including funding life-saving research, securing support for a stroke strategy, fostering living spaces that help Nova Scotians be more active and healthy, and offering life-saving CPR programs.
  • The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia provides healthy living information and supports policies and programs to help Nova Scotians be healthy and active. The Foundation is a recognized leader in linking community planning to improved health and has developed and delivered physical activity programs to help Nova Scotians get active each day. 
  • The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia works extensively with Nova Scotia’s provincial and municipal governments to bring about healthy public policies that improve the health of Nova Scotia – now and in the future. In Nova Scotia:
    • We have contributed expertise to the development of Nova Scotia’s stroke strategy and we have helped secure financial support for its implementation;
    • We are working with communities and governments to develop living spaces that help Nova Scotians be more physically active;
    • We are supporting the provincial government and the Nova Scotia Recreation Facility Association on increasing the number of defibrillators installed in sport and recreation facilities.
